What is KAIROS?
Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning "right or perfect moment" or "God's Special Time." The mission of Kairos Prison Ministry is to bring Christ's unconditional love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families and those who work with them. Also, Kairos seeks to assist the incarcerated in the transition to becoming a productive citizen.

What happens at KAIROS?
Kairos is a Thursday-Sunday event supported by a group of volunteers from a variety of Christian denominations and churches, including volunteers here at Grace Lutheran Church. These volunteers enter the Federal Correction Facility known as "Terminal Island." The prisoners participate in coordinated talks, discussions, chapel mediations and worship music led by the loving spirit of the volunteers. Many prisoners experience a religious awakenening and accept God's call on their life to be Christian witnesses during their stay in the Institution and beyond.

How can you support KAIROS?

1. Pray! We want to surround the entire weekend in prayer. Let us know if you are willing to set aside 30 mins. each day of the weekend to pray for those volunteering or attending Kairos.

2. Write A Letter. Most prisoners have lost complete contact with the outside world, including their own families, after just five years behind bars. Handwritten short letters of encouragement are precious and can have a powerful impact on the lvies of inmates. You may leave letters in Jan Stolzenburg's mailbox at Grace.

3. Color A Shield. Many prisoners stopped receiving gifts from the outside world long ago. We present every prisoner with shields colored by volunteers, often children. Let us know if you or your children would like to color a shield.

4. Support the Cookies Fund. These cookies are special for the prisoners and the reason many of them initially decide to visit Kairos. Let us know if you want to help us purchase store-bought cookies.

5. Support Kairos financially. Every volunteer pays $125 for the opportunity to give up his or her weekend and serve these prisoners in love. Some volunteers could use financial support. Please consider writing a check for any amount made out to "Kairos FCI Terminal Island." Leave the donation in an envelope in Jan Stolzenburg's mailbox at Grace Lutheran Church. Any extra cash will be used to purchase cookies.
